Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a dead-end town of 12,000 people in the middle of nowhere: because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do.

Heather never thought she would compete in Panic, a legendary game played by graduating seniors, where the stakes are high and the payoff is even higher. She’d never thought of herself as fearless, the kind of person who would fight to stand out. But when she finds something, and someone, to fight for, she will discover that she is braver than she ever thought.

Dodge has never been afraid of Panic. His secret will fuel him, and get him all the way through the game, he’s sure of it. But what he doesn't know is that he’s not the only one with a secret. Everyone has something to play for.

For Heather and Dodge, the game will bring new alliances, unexpected revelations, and the possibility of first love for each of them—and the knowledge that sometimes the very things we fear are those we need the most.

Panic is an explosive, heart-pounding contemporary that will have you peeing your pants with terror when the characters participate in games which put their life in danger in order to win $64,000.

I was over the moon when I’d been approved to read Panic from Netgalley and put it straight to the top of my TBR. I’d heard so much hype surrounding the book and once I was in a dystopia mood, I went straight to Panic. However, BIG ANNOUNCEMENT, Panic is not a dystopia! All the listings and pre-read comments on goodreads have all categorised this book incorrectly because it is actually a contemporary. I completely understand why people categorised Panic as a dystopia based on the vague synopsis given and Lauren Oliver’s previous work, The Delirium Series – however this mis-categorisation led to me picking up a book I wasn’t in the mood for. However, once I’d accepted that Panic was a contemporary and moved on, I quickly got immersed into the story and began to enjoy this story for what it was.

Panic reminded me in a way of John Green’s characters because Panic’s characters were all from different backgrounds and had their own issues – which ultimately led to their participation in the ‘Panic’ games. Katie McGarry’s writing also came to mind at moments, especially during the romance and relationship elements of Panic, due to the explosive dynamics involved. I would definitely recommend Panic if you are a fan of either of these authors as you’ll no doubt see the similarities too and therefore enjoy this story.

Overall Panic was an enjoyable read, at times the story development was predictable- however I somewhat expect that when reading a contemporary so I didn't feel like it was too much of a negative of this book.

The #1 New York Times bestselling Beautiful Creatures series continues in this brand-new digital-exclusive story.

Catch up with Ethan, Lena, and Link as they finally graduate from high school and get ready to leave the small Southern town of Gatlin. But when Dark Caster Ridley makes an appearance, the sometime bad girl can't resist picking a fight with her sometime boyfriend, Link. Angry and rebellious as ever, Ridley ends up alone in New York City and becomes entangled in the dangerous underground Caster club scene, where the stakes are high and losers pay the ultimate price.

Where's a Linkubus when you need him?

Ridley and Link are back!

This short story by Beautiful Creatures authors, Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, is introduction back into The Caster Chronicles world and cleverly transitions the narration from Ethan over to Link and Ridley beginning their spin-off series – an element I thoroughly enjoyed and felt tied the two series together nicely.

Ridley and Link are as argumentative and unruly as usual whilst maintaining their version of a functional relationship. That is, until Link says three ‘little’ words that sends Ridley running away and leaving Link to wonder where she is. Ridley being Ridley, ends up in an unexpected situation which then leads us into the story of Dangerous Creatures (Out 20th May).

Dangerous Dream was an enjoyable read and I loved each and every page. I really enjoyed The Caster Chronicles (maybe not so much Beautiful Chaos but all the rest were good) and therefore I was glad to have a small narrative by Ethan before switching over to Link & Ridley’s narratives for the Dangerous Creatures Series. Ridley and Link were always my favourite characters in The Caster Chronicles so I’m super excited they are getting a spin-off series - I can’t wait to learn even more about them, especially their thoughts now they are both narrating. Fabulous – A must read!

All they have in common is that they're less than perfect. And all they're looking for is the perfect distraction.

Kate's dream boyfriend has just broken up with her and she's still reeling from her diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. Aidan planned on being a lifer in the army and went to Afghanistan straight out of high school. Now he's a disabled young veteran struggling to embrace his new life. When Kate and Aidan find each other neither one wants to get attached. But could they be right for each other after all?

Before reading this book, it was the cover that drew me in. I absolutely love the softness of the pink and the ‘put-together’ feel of the heart shape element. After reading the book I can see elements of the cover representing aspects of the story and that makes me love it even more now.

The Summer I Found You is an enjoyable read about romance, self-discovery, learning to live with life changes as well as body changes. Both main characters have a new life that they have unwilling been handed. Aidan has returned back from war with the loss of an arm and Katie is coming to terms with being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Both have their own issues and are coming to terms with this new element of their life but when they meet each other, both find the other refreshingly easy to get along with and as an escape from the issues they face.

As regularly readers to my blog and watchers of my YouTube channel will know, I am not a big contemporary reader but this book was amazing and had me hooked from the first page! I really enjoyed the easiness I felt when reading this book, the writing just seemed to flow and I was swept away whilst discovering Katie and Aidan’s feelings for each other. I also enjoyed the element of self-discovery and coming-to-terms that both characters went through, this added another layer to the story and I was willing both characters along – even if I wanted to smack Katie sometimes for being so stupid!

The Summer I Found You is an enjoyable fluffy love story but with important underlying messages. I would recommend for fans of Katie McGarry’s books (Pushing the Limits, Dare You To, and Crash Into You).

Brooke Novella Review - Under the Never Sky #2.5

First book in the series

Set just before the events of Into the Still Blue, the conclusion to Veronica Rossi's Under the Never Sky trilogy, this breathtaking novella is a satisfying stand-alone for new readers as well as an exciting glimpse at favorite characters from the trilogy. Pulsing with romance and danger, Brooke will leave readers desperate for the conclusion to this epic and unforgettable saga.

The only fight she can't win is the one for Perry's heart. Following the stunning climax in Through the Ever Night, the Tides have been forced to seek shelter from the Aether storms in a dismal, secluded cave. But Brooke's memories of the cave go back much further, to when she and Perry used to come here together. That was before Perry fell in love with Aria and before Vale's dealings with the Dwellers altered the course of the Tides forever.

Now, with her sister back from a haunting year in captivity and Aria lying unconscious in the sick bay, Brooke struggles to put the pieces of her life back together. Without Perry, who is she? And what is her role in this frightening new world? As these questions swirl about her, an old threat to the Tides resurfaces, and Brooke is forced to put the lives of her people before her own. But in taking this step outside of herself, Brooke may finally discover what she truly wants.

Brooke’s character has been a bit of an enigma in both Under the Never Sky and Through the Ever Night. As Perry’s ex, she’s always been part of the story through her interactions with Perry and Aria’s weariness of her, however she’s never had a serious part to play in the development of the story. I therefore didn’t really know what to expect before reading this novella and wasn’t eager to read it. However, once I started reading Brooke’s POV and discovering more about her I actually found myself liking her character and addicted to the situations which were developed in this novella.

The Brooke novella is definitely a short story because of the elements that are wrapped up from Under the Never Sky and Through the Ever Night which are addressed within Into the Still Blue. In book 2, Wylan and other members of the tribe left the Tides after an incident and in this novella we discover the aftermath of that. I really liked seeing this aftermath as well as learning more about the brothers within the ‘Six’ and the flirting that ensues with Brooke. A definite read for all fans of the Under the Never Sky series – a novella that cannot be missed!

Roar & Liv Novella Review - Under the Never Sky #0.5

First book in the series

Before Perry and Aria, there was Roar and Liv.

After a childhood spent wandering the borderlands, Roar finally feels like he has a home with the Tides. His best friend Perry is like a brother to him, and Perry's sister, Liv, is the love of his life. But Perry and Liv's unpredictable older brother, Vale, is the Blood Lord of the Tides, and he has never looked kindly on Roar and Liv's union. Normally, Roar couldn't care less about Vale's opinion. But with food running low and conditions worsening every day, Vale's leadership is more vital—and more brutal—than ever. Desperate to protect his tribe, Vale makes a decision that will shatter the life Roar knew and change the fate of the Tides forever.

Set in the harsh but often beautiful world of Veronica Rossi's "unforgettable" Under the Never Sky (Examiner.com), this captivating prequel novella stands on its own for new readers and offers series fans a fascinating look into the character of Roar. Poignant and powerful, Roar and Liv is a love story that will "capture your imagination and your heart." (Justine on Under the Never Sky)

I was excited to discover more about Roar in this novella from his perspective because he was one of my favourite characters from the Under the Never Sky Series. As Perry’s best friend, Roar is a proper ‘lad’ and yet he’s loyal and loving - the object of his affections being is Perry’s sister, Liv, and she feels exactly the same way. However, Liv and Roar are not set to have the happy life together they expected after the Tides tribe leader/blood lord, and also Liv’s brother, arranges her marriage to another tribes’ blood lord in exchange for food and resources which the Tides desperately need.

This novella was a little flat and underwhelming for me as I wanted to learn more about Roar and further experience his witty humour but unfortunately, this doesn’t quite come across the same in the Roar & Liv novella as it did in Under the Never Sky. Overall this novella was an interesting read, especially regarding events that happen in Through the Ever Night (book 2) which this novella further helps provide background for. As novellas go, this was good and worth reading for another book set in this world.

BookTuber/Book Blogger Interview with Nadia Reads (Interview #12)

Hi fellow readers and welcome back for another booktuber/blogger interview.

This fortnight's booktuber/blogger is Nadia from NadiaReads, the linguist master - seriously she speaks like a million languages! Nadia does a great job at mixing her language skills with her love for books and includes videos in different language (see her Book Lover's Survey in Greek - with subtitles video). Here's Nadia's answers to the BookTuber/Blogger Interview Questions. Enjoy.

Please describe your channel and the type of books which you enjoy reading.
My channel is, of course, all about books! I usually do wrap up videos, tags, hauls, to-be-reads, reviews etc. I’ve also started doing some discussion videos, which I enjoyed very much and plan to do more in the future! I mostly read Young Adult books (Surprise! Surprise!). It’s a genre that I’d been reading even before I started booktubing, but got a lot more into it since I started. It’s hard to say no when everyone is talking about how amazing a book is!

What made you decide to start your channel and what are the main reasons you keep making videos?
I started almost a year ago, shortly after I actually found out about it. As most Booktubers, I accidentally stumbled upon that part of Youtube, instantly fell in love with it and a few days later decided I want to make my own videos. I hadn’t even searched into it yet and at first I had planned to only make reviews on my channel. That changed not too long after, of course.
After that I also discovered book blogging and got into that, so by now I’m so deep inside this world filled with crazy book fans that I can’t find my way out! Not that I want to, of course! I love interacting with other booktubers / book bloggers from all around the world and finding out about new books and adding them to my ever-growing to-be-read list.

What is your favourite book?
My all-time favorite would probably be Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, because it’s the one that really started my insane love for books. There are so many other books that I adore, though! Some of them are Incarnate by Jodi Meadows, 1984 by George Orwell, Angelfall by Susan Ee, the list goes on and on...

If you could read one genre for the rest of your life, which genre would you choose?
I would probably pick Young Adult Fantasy. Even though I’ve been reading many different YA genres lately, fantasy is the one that I always fall back into. I prefer it to Dystopian because it keeps one foot in the real world, so to say, which makes it easier for me to relate to.

If you could live in any book world created, which would you choose?
Oh, dear! I’d probably avoid all those crazy dystopian worlds. The possibilities of dying are too high for me... Hell, I’d even stay away from most fantasy worlds! I don’t need any vampires or bloodthirsty zombies hunting me! Maybe I would go with something like Pivot Point by Kasie West. It’s quite similar to the normal world, but with a few paranormal elements here and there to make it more interesting!

What has been your best/favourite booktubing moment so far and why?
Oh there are so many of them! One of them would definitely be doing a liveshow along with Ivymuse, marlinelina and Helene Jeppesen. It was something I was scared to do, because I can’t always think of things to say on the spot, but it turned out great and I loved interacting with those ladies!

Where do you store/show-off your books and how many do you own in total?
I actually have some of them in my mom’s house, some in my dad’s and some in my own. It’s a bit annoying and I’ve been trying to get them all to my own place, but books are heavy and I can’t transport a lot of them at once. According to Goodreads I have a total of 120 books.

Where is your usual place to read and what would your dream reading place look like?
My usual place is on my couch or on my bed. In the summer I also love reading on the beach! My dream reading place would probably look kind of like the photo opposite.

Lastly, which blogs/channels can we usually find you stalking when you're not creating content for your own channel?
Some of the blogs are: Nose Graze, What Comes Next, Gypsy Reviews and Cuddlebuggery.

And some of the Booktubers: Katytastic, Megan Olivier, MegaMad4Books, mysecretbookclub, polandbananasBOOKS and of course ColdTeaAndCrumbs
Thanks so much for having me over Samantha!
Many hugs from Greece,
Nadia

Quentin Jacobsen has spent a lifetime loving the magnificently adventurous Margo Roth Spiegelman from afar. So when she cracks open a window and climbs back into his life—dressed like a ninja and summoning him for an ingenious campaign of revenge—he follows.

After their all-nighter ends and a new day breaks, Q arrives at school to discover that Margo, always an enigma, has now become a mystery. But Q soon learns that there are clues—and they’re for him. Urged down a disconnected path, the closer he gets, the less Q sees of the girl he thought he knew.

Paper Towns was an enjoyable read. I didn't know what I was getting myself into with Paper Towns but I was on high alert for feels similar to The Fault in Our Stars. Luckily this wasn't a tear jerky – at least not for me – I wasn't engulfed into this story like Green’s other work, TFIOS, but I enjoyed his familiar writing style and humor.

The really enjoyed the way this book was split into 3 different parts: Part 1 is a variety of pranks in chapter form; Part 2 is a mystery and involves finding clues; and Part 3 was a race against time, a chapter for every hour of the journey. I felt part 2 could have been shortened as this was the least enjoyable part of the book for me however aspects of it were very important to the story so I understand it’s slowness and concentrate on certain elements when reaching the end.

As for characters, I wasn't sold on Quentin or Margo the two main character at all. I did however love Quentin’s friends, Ben and Radar.

Overall Paper Towns was another witty and enjoyable read from John Green and I now have Looking for Alaska queued up on my Kindle to read soon. Green just has a way of writing that makes my dislike for contemporaries melt away.

City of Glass TMI #3 | Book Review

City of Glass
(The Mortal Instruments #3)

Number of Pages: 541

To save her mother's life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters - never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he's willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City - whatever the cost?

Love is a mortal sin and the secrets of the past prove deadly as Clary and Jace face down Valentine in the third installment of the New York Times bestselling series The Mortal Instruments.

City of Glass is the third book in The Mortal Instruments Series and was due to be the conclusion but more books have since been published. Knowing this, I was intrigued to see how the story would conclude and what elements would remain unanswered in order to warrant another 3 books. After finishing this book, I am now even more intrigued to see how this series carries on because it was neatly tied together in City of Glass.

This series has been hit or miss with me. I loved book 1 City of Bones which I devoured in only a day or two - this was mostly due to the starky humour that Cassandra Clare injects into her characters. However, book 2 City of Ashes, was a bit blah for me as I felt it was predictable and repetitive with the humour lacking from book 1. I was therefore hesitant to continue with the series but, after hearing more and more great things from fellow booktubers and bloggers, I decided to carry on.

I did enjoy City of Glass, however all the fantastic elements – Sebastian, Idris, Clary’s Mum etc - were all a bit flat for me as I’d either been spoilt already (Sebastian’s reveal) or had predicted it was coming (Clary’s Mum). This makes reviewing this book very hard as I really can’t say I really liked it because there was just no excitement. The hard part is because I know if I’d not been spoilt on some of the story developments I would have loved it more. I therefore have to review this book only 3 stars because of the reasons I’ve previously described. I will be continuing with the series, but not in a rush.

BookTuber/Book Blogger Interview with Megan Olivier (Interview #11)

Hi fellow readers and welcome back for another booktuber/blogger interview.

This fortnight's booktuber/blogger is fellow Brit, Megan Olivier. Megan is a Northern lass with a passion for reading and writing. Her aspirations to become a writer adds depth to her book reviews. Megan's channel is one of my favourites and she has the most beautiful bookshelf wallpaper in the background of some of her videos (I need some of that when I move into my own house :-D). Here's Megan's answers to the BookTuber/Blogger Interview Questions. Enjoy.

Please describe your channel and the type of books which you enjoy reading.
My YouTube channel was created, in October of last year, to be a place where I could
discuss the books I love to read with others who share my passion. I read Young Adult fiction more than anything else but every now and then I'll pick up an adult or non-fiction book (I'm in a little self-help book phase right now). I'm also planning to expand my channel a little and add the occasional vlog or lifestyle video to spice things up a bit. Books will always be at the forefront though. How could they not be? Reading and writing is such a huge part of my life.

What made you decide to start your channel and what are the main reasons you keep making videos?
Personally, I don't have many 'real life' friends who enjoy reading as much as I do. I was thrilled when I stumbled upon BookTube, a place where people talk about nothing but books! What could be better?
I found BookTube at a time when I was feeling extremely unhappy within myself. I had just decided to leave college, and I was so unsure about what was going to come next. Reading provided me with that little bit of escapism that I so desperately needed after spending the last two years in a constantly stressed out state. I don't think I'll ever be able to stop making videos! My viewers are so wonderful and kind. I've never been a part of a nicer community of people. I've also made so many amazing friends from all over the world.

What is your favourite book?
If you've watched any of my videos this will be no surprise (I mention it nearly ever time because I love it so much)... Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman. I read it on a family holiday when I was thirteen years old and have re-read it multiple times since. It was my first glimpse into YA Dystopian (before I even knew what that word meant), a genre that I now love. I think the main reason why I was so affected by this book - I thought about it for weeks after - was because of the heartbreaking romance. I had to jump into the swimming pool so no one would see my tears when I read it for the first time.

If you could read one genre for the rest of your life, which genre would you choose?
I'd probably give you a different answer if you asked me next month. Right now I'd say contemporary because I'm loving John Green and Rainbow Rowell; their characters are so unique and hilarious! But there isn't a genre that I dislike so I'd probably be happy with any as long as I was still able to read.

If you could live in any book world created, which would you choose?
That's a hard one! So many of the worlds I have read about are pretty awful (Legend, Divergent and, of course, Noughts & Crosses). I think I'd have to choose the world of Maggie Stiefvater's The Scorpio Races. I love the idea of the little seaside town. It seems like a pretty dangerous and scary place to live but Maggie describes everything so lyrically. It sounds beautiful.

What has been your best/favourite booktubing moment so far and why?
There have been so many great moments! Seeing my subscribers go up so fast, and having Rainbow Rowell retweet me were both amazing experiences. But if I had to choose one I'd probably say the moment I began talking to my BookTube friend, Anna. She is a couple of years older than me, and lives in Poland. We have so much in common, it's actually ridiculous. When she sent me a package (that I unboxed on camera) I almost had tears in my eyes. Everyone on BookTube has been so supportive of me and my dream of becoming a writer myself. I love that BookTube brings people closer together.

Where do you store/show-off your books and how many do you own in total?
I keep all of the books that I have read on a single bookshelf in my bedroom. It is overflowing right now and I'm pretty sure I'll be in need of a personal library soon. Any unread books that I own are stored under my desk. My bedroom is tiny...the books are taking over! I actually have no idea how many books I own in total. Definitely over 100. I'm too scared to count.

Where is your usual place to read and what would your dream reading place look like?
I read wherever I can. I take a book with me almost everywhere I go so I can read at every spare moment. Most often this is when I'm sitting in bed at night. This is not the best idea though: I end up staying up all night when I'm hooked on a good story!
My dream reading place would have to be a quiet tropical beach. In fact, my own private reading beach! I love reading on holiday.

Lastly, which blogs/channels can we usually find you stalking when you're not creating content for your own channel?
In terms of blogs I LOVE Kate Ormand. Her debut YA dystopian novel comes out in June and I am so excited! For BookTube there are so many people that I love to watch. Some of my favourite channels are: Kassidy Voinche, Benjaminoftomes, ColdTeaAndCrumbs (of course), abookaffair, Sarah Churchill, Kerrie Ann Salsac, Helene Jeppesen, and InkBonesBooks. There are so many more though!
